Why I Love | Photography

My first camera was most definitely a throw-away one. Gold and covered in stars, it only took about twelve pictures before it had to be brought in to Boots and I could discover what I had actually taken pictures of. Since then, I've upgraded a little bit and don't have to stand in line at the photo counter to find out who made it into my pictures, but I still get the same thrill. Today, I wanted to write a post about why I love taking pictures and some of the tips I have picked up along the way...

Lighting
Good lighting is key as it's time consuming and not as effective to add it in later on. My favourite lighting is of course - natural light. It looks the best and the pictures are always easier to edit afterwards. If it's really bright, make sure that your camera is adjusted to that or on the auto setting and if it's not as bright as you would like, consider taking your pictures outside or in front of a large window.

Multiple Pictures
A good tip I once heard for photographing other people is to take pictures before you say you are or in between as sometimes you get the most natural poses and it doesn't look staged. Every picture is different, the light or angle might change so there's no way of knowing what looks best until you try it. Unlike my aforementioned disposable camera, you can always delete pictures you don't feel look right later on.

Get To Know Your Camera
It's so easy to just leave your camera on auto mode and snap away. Granted, if you don't know what you're doing, auto mode is great for no hassle pictures but there are so many videos and step by step articles online about how best to set up your camera that there's really no excuse not to. When getting a new camera, it's also a really good idea to get out and about taking some test shots to see how it works best rather than just diving straight in.

Plan Ahead
If you're taking pictures of a new place, look online to find out where the best spots are and to get ideas. For portraits, Pinterest and Instagram are a hub of creativity that you can take something from. If you're going to be outside, check the weather for when it will be clear and take a tripod if you think that the pictures might be unsteady.

Change Perspectives
It seems really obvious but sometimes just bending down to be eye level with the object or subject can change how the picture looks so much. Even switching the frame into a portrait from a landscape can sometimes bring up things you haven't noticed before. The "Rule Of Thirds" is something that also makes a photograph look a lot less staged and by bringing up the grid function on your camera, is pretty easy to do.

Do you like taking photographs?

  14. Totally agree with you about the importance of lighting! I'm a huge fan of post-editing, but lighting in the moment is still super important and especially when dealing with portraiture - gotta get those flattering angeeeelllllssss haha ;)

  15. Great tips! I love digital cameras as I can take as many pics as I want to capture something perfectly - with the things I like to photograph most being my dog and kids, you don't have time to ose and just have to take lots and hope for the best, haha! It makes me even more impressed with the old school photos my parents managed to get of me as a kid!

I hope that your week has been going well so far :)

  23. I'm usually the one in front of the camera, so I leave my husband to do all the photo taking. I do enjoy snapping some though on my phone when I'm out and about!

  24. I love taking photos! Whilst I take a lot for my own blog, capturing that moment perfectly can be even more satisfying and magical when it's not for the purpose of a post! Great tips by the way, especially in terms of lighting - natural is by far the way to go.
