Upcycle | Side Table

I've never had a go at upcycling anything before but when I spotted a beautiful side table the other week, I knew that I couldn't let it go without seeing if I could do something about it. Today I wanted to share how I transformed a few pieces of chipboard into an item of furniture I'm happy to have on display. Read on to check out what I did and to see some more pictures...

Before
The side table was basically three pieces of chipboard slotted and nailed together. Structurally, it was pretty good and didn't need any extra reinforcement but aesthetically, it definitely needed something more! I settled on a monochrome colour scheme of white and a darker shade for the edges. For the top of the table, I bought some vinyl wrap in a DIY store which had a marble design on it. I was wary what it would come out looking like but there was only one way to find out...

During
The first thing I did was to sand everything! I'm definitely not an expert but I know that the care and time you take before painting ensures that the end job looks as professional as it can. The chipboard had a slight shine to it and the edges were a little rough so I really took my time making sure that it looked as smooth and matte as I could make it.

For the first layer of paint, I used an undercoat and primer. I got most of it all over myself so I'm glad that I was wearing old clothes and painting in the garden! I left that to dry for a day and then used two layers of white wood paint leaving six hours between them to ensure that it was completely dry and there were no streaky marks.

For the edges, I used a darker colour (and a tiny paintbrush because I'm not so great at precision) as I thought that it might give the table some more definition. I really like the shape of the base so I wanted to enhance that and I really feel like the change in colour has done that.

Lastly, I turned the table over on top of the marble vinyl spread out on the floor. I drew a circle around where I wanted it to be and then cut it out very carefully with scissors. I carefully peeled off the back and stuck it down.

After
I'm so happy with how the table turned out and I actually really enjoyed the whole process from start to finish. I've got another item of furniture I've got my eye on to upcycle so watch this space!

Have you ever upcycled anything?

  3. Your upcycled side table looks amazing. You did a fantastic job with the painting and everything. Great tip to wear old clothes! I need to really remember that one, because I've been known to forget about it when I get caught up in DIY projects....and a few times I did end up destroying my fav items...Working outside is another great tip. We don't want paint to get everywhere.
