Health | Staying Safe In The Sun

In England right now we're experiencing a very unusual heatwave (basically, we've had more than a week of sunshine without some rain to interrupt the fun) and so today, I thought that I would share some top tips for staying safe in the sun. I've grown up spending my summers in Sicily, somewhere where 40 degree heat isn't unusual so I've definitely picked up some tricks to help me adapt. Read on to check out what they are...

Avoid The Midday Sun
The sun is at it's peak between 10 and 4 but just avoiding it for a couple of hours around midday will definitely reduce your risk of burns and heatstroke. Leave the beach or the pool around lunchtime or opt for sightseeing and tourist activities that take place inside.

────────

Sunhat & Glasses
This seems like an obvious point but so many people think that it doesn't apply to them when they are not on the move. A wide brimmed hat or a cap will protect more skin and make sure that you pick sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays.

SPF
A higher factor number is preferable for sunbathing and it doesn't stop melanin being produced which means that you still tan whilst being protected from harmful UV rays. Use SPF even when it's cloudy as you can still burn and opt for foundation with a factor of at least 10.

────────

Water
Pop a bottle of water in the freezer when you get up in the morning and it will be nice and cold for when you leave. It's also useful to hold against prickly heat or hot skin if you are out for the day and feel uncomfortable.

How do you protect yourself against the sun?
