Planning | Keeping Your Costs Down In The French Riviera

The French Riviera - or la Côte d'Azur if you prefer the French version - is one of the most popular holiday destinations for jet-setters. It's been a favourite since the end of the 18th century, and it's fair to say that the reputation of the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France - from Cassis to the Italian border - has been growing steadily since. In fact, you could even have spotted Queen Victoria and King Edward VII after the arrival of the railway travel. Many celebrities have now homes in the region, including Elton John and the French 1950-60's beauty Brigitte Bardot. Every year, the coastline is filled with famous actors and directors visiting the film festival in Cannes and enjoying the sunny beachside. In short, it can be difficult to think of a place more glamorously appealing and typically French than the Riviera. It has only one problem: It can be an expensive vacation if you're not careful.

Be Flexible With Your Plans
There is no surprise when we say that you need to plan carefully to keep your costs down. The French Riviera transforms into a sunny paradise from May to early October, which means that you can afford to be flexible with your travel plans. Avoiding the peak season - from mid-July to mid-August - can save you a lot of money. Additionally, you'll find it's easier to  get a couple of weeks off after the summer than it is in July and August when most employees with children generally take their holidays. Finally, if you can choose your dates, you should try to leave midweek to avoid the weekend crowd in airports and on the road.

Elegance & Riviera Go Hand-In-Hand
It's fair to say that planning your vacation in the French Riviera is not like any other summer holiday resort. For a start; the region is popular with wealthy families and renters. As a result, you can expect your traditional summer clothes - bikini and a pair of ripped denim shorts, or a short dress from your favourite high street chain - to be frowned upon. For daytime outings and visits, you might want to try something a little more elegant such as this lovely Joseph Ribkoff dress. Indeed, you'll find that some restaurants and shops might request you leave if you're not dressed 'appropriately'.

Eating Out Without Running Out Of Budget
The Mediterranean cuisine offers many exciting dishes to health-conscious gourmets. Fresh fruits and vegetables, a lot of healthy olive oils and delicious fish are a staple of the local cuisine. You will be pleased to know that, although the region has many Michelin-starred restaurants, you can enjoy delicious dishes in most of the local and more affordable restaurants. As the critic Alain Ducasse notes, you can find the typical flavours of the Mediterranean diets in places offering an à la carte menu for less than 30. And is there anything more glamorous than a Niçoise salad in Nice?

There is no denying that the French Riviera is a naturally posh area. However, it doesn't mean that you have to break the bank to plan your perfect Riviera vacation. With a little bit of planning and smart thinking, you can be one of the trendy jet-setters for a portion of the cost!

Where are you travelling to this summer?
